09/20/2012 WOD

TODAY'S WOD IS A SPECIAL ONE. IT IS NAMED AFTER A DISEASE THAT KILLS MANY EVERY YEAR, AND STRIKES CERTAIN PEOPLE  MORE THEN OTHERS.

FIGHTING TO GET THROUGH THIS EXTREMELY TOUGH WOD IS NOTHING COMPARED TO WHAT THOSE THAT FACE THIS DISEASE GO THROUGH, SO WHEN THIS WORKOUT GETS HARD AND YOU WANT TO QUIT, JUST REMEMBER ALL OF THOSE THAT ARE FIGHTING THIS DISEASE AND NOT GIVING UP.

THE WOD IS NAMED "CANCER"

5 ROUNDS FOR TIME:

100 SINGLE JUMP ROPES

30 WALL BALL SQUATS

20 KNEES TO BAR

15 KB SWINGS

10 HANGING CLEANS

WE USED A 12# MEDICINE BALL FOR THE WALL BALLS, A 25# AND 50# KB FOR THE SWINGS, AND 65#S FOR THE HANGING CLEANS. ADJUST THESE WEIGHTS AND ROUNDS AS NEEDED.

Cancer- A study, conducted in 2006 by the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, reviewed 32 studies on firefighters to determine the cancer risk.  The study’s results confirmed previous findings of an elevated risk for multiple myeloma, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, prostate, and testicular cancers.  Eight additional cancers were listed as having a “possible” association with firefighting.  In a three-year study completed in 2005 by the University of Cincinnati, researchers concluded that firefighters face a 102% greater chance of contracting testicular cancer than any other type of worker, a 53% greater chance of multiple myeloma, a 51% greater chance of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a 39% greater chance of skin cancer, a 32% greater chance of brain cancer, a 28% greater chance of prostate cancer, a 22% greater chance of stomach cancer, and a 21% greater chance of colon cancer.  “Firefighters are exposed to numerous cancer-causing substances,” said head researcher Grace LeMasters.  “I think obviously they have not got enough protection from that exposure.  We feel that the protective gear that protects them from acute exposures, such as heat and carbon monoxide, doesn’t protect them from the chemical residues that cause cancer.” Cancer may soon be the number one killer of firefighters and is definitely something we should be trying to avoid.  Check out the Code 3 for a Cure Foundation these guys are getting it done and helping our fellow brothers and sisters get the help they need.

I TOLD YOU AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS POST THIS DISEASE AFFECTS SOME MORE THEN OTHERS RIGHT...SO NOW YOU KNOW THAT FIREFIGHTERS ARE AT A MUCH GREATER RISK TO CONTRACT THIS DISEASE, SO WE MUST TAKE CARE OF OURSELVES AND IMPROVING OUR HEALTH IS A GREAT PLACE TO START!!!

REMEMBER TRAIN TO LIVE!!!
